What DCA is

DCA is paid by the Department of Social Protection for a child under 16 with a severe disability who requires ongoing care and attention substantially in excess of that needed by another child of the same age.

The test is about the level of care your child needs, not about which diagnosis they have or whether they have one yet.

Filling in the form

The application asks you to describe the extra care your child needs across the day. Parents consistently say this is the hardest form they fill in, because it asks you to write down the difficult parts of your child's life in plain terms.

Be concrete and be honest about the hard days rather than the best days. Describe how long things take, how often you intervene, what supervision is needed, and what would happen without it.

A supporting letter from a GP, paediatrician, therapist or school can be included alongside the medical section.

If you are refused

A refusal is not the end. You can ask for a review and you can appeal to the Social Welfare Appeals Office. A significant number of appeals succeed once fuller information is provided.
